Dvorak's Symphony No. 9, "From the New World" wafts through a hospice recreation room. Sitting at the grand piano is a young girl, Chiori, with a prodigious ability to play any piece of music after one hearing. Keisuke Kisaragi whose career was abruptly cut short when he jumped in front of a bullet fired by a crazed gunman. The nerves in one hand were severed but he saved the life of Chiori. The tragic incident takes the lives of Chiori's parents, however, and Keisuke becomes her guardian. Not long after their return to Japan, Keisuke discovers Chiori's musical gift.

And starting with Season 14, Ukyo’s current partner is Wataru Kaburagi, an elite bureaucrat who came to the Metropolitan Police Department on temporary assignment. As the first partner without any career of a police officer, he will face challenging cases together with Ukyo.

Seiran Gakuen is an exclusive private boys' high school. It's the start of the summer break and Yoshikuni has decided to spend this year's summer at the school's Shoraikan dormitory, as have Mitsuhiro, Kanji and Iwatsuki. All four boys have their own reasons for not going home. Yoshikuni's girlfriend is Hiroko, but with his own reasons, he tells her he doesn't want to see her for a while. Hiroko isn't satisfied with this but Yoshikuni keeps on avoiding her. On their first day, Yoshikuni and Mitsuhiro set out to buy food for dinner. They bumped into Osamu, a day student. Hiroko and her friend Aki turns up. Aki asks Yoshikuni why he dumped Hiroko for no apparent reason. Hiroko can't take it any more and bursts into tears. Takagi who lives in the dormitory next door sees this. Some days later, Mitsuhiro's step-mother Keiko visits the Shoraikan dormitory. He is cold-hearted towards her, like a different person. Yoko urges the family to move the car into the living room in order to destroy the evidence by taking it apart.
