Origins

A genealogist and a cop: a great team for uncovering the origins of the crime. On a murder case, genealogist Margot Laurent teams up with Arthur Du Plessis, a young and self-assured cop. Who committed the murder? And why? A murder always has its dark side: a fabricated family history that becomes an urban legend. And who can claim that their family has no secrets? Margot and Arthur strip away the hidden mysteries to shed light on the murder. Arthur is the no-nonsense one, here to arrest the culprit, while Margot, the genealogist, is more interested in the past, in the prehistory of the murder, in what prefigured the tragedy before it happened. Between them, Margot and Arthur bring the events into focus. Here lie hidden family traumas, stories sometimes ignored by those who must endure the aftermath, which give multiple layers to the whodunnit.

At All Costs

A small company valiantly struggles to survive under the respectful yet probing camera of Claire Simon in “At All Costs.” As the docu opens, founder and manager Jihad is off to see his banker. The lack of ready cash to pay his loyal employees, wholesale produce providers and a whole range of other creditors, including the tax-gobbling French government, is omnipresent. From a staff of 14, Jihad is down to three cooks, one delivery driver and a secretary in less than six months. The good-natured pluck of the remaining employees is at the heart of the film. Les Sacrifiés

In 1955, a year after the birth of the National Liberation Front (FLN), Mahmoud was expelled from Algeria by the colonial authorities who feared his revolutionary speeches. At the age of 27, he arrived in the Algerian slum of Nanterre. Roughly questioned by FLN activists, in disagreement with the Algerian Nationalist Movement (MNA) who wanted to recognize theirs, he was then accepted as the local hairdresser and shoemaker. Subsequently, he became a driver during anti-MNA expeditions. Accepting increasingly dangerous missions, he is imprisoned by the French police and once again undergoes interrogations and special treatment by the police which will definitively undermine his sanity. One day, he no longer recognized his companions, and when joy broke out among the FLN militants, at the announcement of the signing of the Evian Accords, Mahmoud remained alone, frozen in an attitude of refusal, walled in his madness. Algeria has just won its independence.
