Das Schiff Wilhelm Gustloff läuft mit dem zivilen Kapitän Hellmuth Kehding aus Gotenhafen aus. An Bord sind über 10.000 Personen, die auf der Flucht vor der herannahenden Sowjetarmee sind und in Sicherheit gebracht werden sollen. Am 30. Januar 1945 kommt es zur Katastrophe: Drei Torpedos eines sowjetischen U-Boots schlagen in das Schiff ein und bringen es zum Kentern. Etwa 9.000 Menschen sterben, darunter viele Kinder.
