Alfie Zimmer, traveling salesman, contemplates suicide as he studies a notebook of collected graffiti in a motel during another business trip. In his solitary life, with only miles and miles of the empty road as his companion, those "voices on the walls" became his friends; something to think about during the long drive, something precious and important, something that spoke to him.
