Primera Guerra Mundial (1914-1918) Narra la relación entre el joven corresponsal Ernest Hemingway y la enfermera de la Cruz Roja que le cuidó tras ser herido. Ernest es un muchacho valiente y decidido, pero también bastante irresponsable: durante una misión resulta herido y es trasladado a un hospital. Allí la enfermera Agnes se hace cargo de él.
