La historia interminable es un libro que se contiene a sí mismo. En la historia, aparece el libro, en la historia contada dentro de la historia, vuelve a aparecer. Cada vez significa algo distinto. En última instancia, seguir las aventuras de Bastián es seguir las peripecias de alguien que es atrapado cada vez más por la literatura.
