El 13 de septiembre de 1999: La Base Lunar Alfa, situado en el cráter lunar Platón, es una colonia de la investigación científica y de vigilancia sobre los silos de residuos atómicos de la Tierra almacenados en el lado lejano de la Luna. La energía magnética se basta para provocar una reacción en cadena explosiva de los residuos, volando la Luna fuera de la órbita de la Tierra. El satélite se transforma en una especie de nave espacial gigante y sin rumbo a través de la galaxia, y a lo largo de la serie se viven diferentes peripecias, encuentros con otras culturas y formas de vida en el Universo, peligros, aventuras y problemas que deben resolver, hasta que debe ser abandonada en pos de perpetuar la raza humana en otro planeta.

Sinopsis: After an atomic explosion blasts the Moon out of Earth orbit, Moonbase Alpha drifts in space, with 300 people on board. When a rescue team from Earth arrives in a faster-than-light space ship, everyone is overjoyed that they can now return to Earth. But Moonbase Commander John Koenig, having undergone an experimental brain soothing process after receiving a concussion in a crash on the Lunar surface, sees not friends from Earth but gruesome monsters which have telepathically caused all others on Alpha to see an illusion of an Earth party. The aliens are desperate for radiation and plan to manipulate the Alphans into detonating nuclear waste on the Lunar surface, reducing the Moon and everyone on it to dust. Koenig must expose this conspiracy to save his people.
