Es el inicio de la Semana de Pascua. En los próximos días, miles de peregrinos llegarán a Jerusalén para celebrar la fiesta más importante en su calendario religioso. Para la administración romana, dirigida por Poncio Pilato, es el momento más difícil del año. Para el Sumo Sacerdote Caifás y los sacerdotes del templo la carga de trabajo será pesada y la presión para mantener el orden civil será intensa. Entonces llegan noticias de que Jesús el Galileo se aproxima a la ciudad a lomos de un burro y entrará en Jerusalén a través la Puerta Este de ciudad, cumpliendo así dos de las más poderosas profecías que anuncian la venida del Mesías, el que muchos creen que liderará la victoria militar o traerá la salvación espiritual.
