San Francisco, la ciudad de la bahía, hogar de los funiculares, el dorado puente Golden Gate, las calles inclinadas... y los asesinatos, necesita de quienes se ocupen de mantener la seguridad. Ellos son el detective Mike Stone (Karl Malden) con 23 años en el cuerpo de policia y su joven y guapo (muy, pero que muy guapo) compañero, el inspector Steve Keller (Michael Douglas). Las Calles de San Francisco fue una de las series más populares de los años 70, una época repleta de dramas policiales de buena calidad en la televisión.El gran éxito que tuvo la serie entre el público se debió mayormente a la química entre los dos protagonistas, el veterano con mas de 20 años de carrera y el novato educado en la universidad, que además le valió 16 nominaciones a los premios Emmy durante los cinco años en que se transmitió, incluídos cuatro para Malden como actor principal y tres para Douglas como actor de reparto en una serie dramática. En la quinta temporada se incorporó al reparto el actor Richard Hacth (conocido posteriormente como el "Capitán Apolo"en la serie "Galactica:Estrella de combate") en el papel de el inspector "Dan Robbins" sustituyendo a Michael Douglas tras abandonar la serie.
