Melquíades es un león montés, o lo que se podría llamar un puma, de pelaje sonrosado. Viste el cuello de camisa alzado sobre el pescuezo, luce puños de camisa a juego y lazo de color negro al estilo del poeta Poe. Sin embargo Melquíades como León de Montaña que es, tiene características especiales y notables, contrarias a lo que a un buen puma se debería referir. Su primera virtud es la de la educación y la cultura. Tiene la ilusión de que yendo por el mundo con buenos modales se puede conseguir cualquier cosa, y sin embargo, se encuentra frecuentemente contrariado precisamente por ello.
