El programa debutó en 2011 como un spin-off del exitoso Criminal Minds, que se estrenó en 2005. El equipo de elaboración de perfiles de esta edición también trabajó para la Unidad de Análisis del Comportamiento de la Oficina Federal de Investigaciones en Quantico, Virginia. En un episodio de abril de 2010 de Criminal Minds, durante la quinta temporada del programa, el equipo original conoció al nuevo equipo y trabajó con ellos para encontrar un asesino en serie de San Francisco.
