La serie trata sobre la relación de dos personajes: Ataru Moroboshi quien es posiblemente el idiota más infiel, desafortunado y lascivo que haya nacido, y Lum, una Ogra (extraterrestre) vestida con un bikini de tigre, por culpa de los celos Ataru siempre esta electrificado (Lum tira rayos). La serie hace la crónica de las aventuras de estos dos adolescentes y personajes realmente extraños.
