Segunda parte de Los pilares de la tierra, aunque la trama transcurre dos siglos después en la misma ciudad, Kingsbridge, y los personajes anda tienen que ver con los de la anterior novela y serie. Ken Follet (Cardiff, Gales, 5 de junio de 1949) está especializado en novelas ambientadas en el Medievo y se puede considerar un gran erudito del tema. Parte de la trama está ubicada en la Peste Negra que asoló Europa en el siglo XIV. La peste negra o muerte negra se refiere a la pandemia de peste más devastadora en la historia de la humanidad que afectó a Europa en el siglo XIV y que alcanzó un punto máximo entre 1347 y 1353; se estima que la misma fue causa de muerte de 25 millones de personas (aproximadamente un tercio de la población del continente en aquel entonces). Sin embargo pese al dramatismo de esta pandemia en la serie aparece en los últimos capítulos y nos es mostrado de una forma muy suave.
