La historia trata de un niño sensible e inteligente, con talento para el canto y la música, es entregado contra su voluntad por su padrastro a un músico callejero (el Señor Vitalis) para trabajar como ayudante y músico, más adelante en la historia se revela que el señor Vitalis fue un famoso cantante de ópera venido a menos. Trabajando con él toma mucho aprecio de los animales que usan en sus presentaciones, en especial de un perro llamado "Capi" (de Capitán) y un pequeño mico de nombre "Corazón Alegre". La historia está llena de situaciones dramáticas como la muerte de dos de los perros del grupo ("Servino" y "Dulce") asesinados por lobos, así como la de "Corazón Alegre" por enfermedad principalmente por hipotermia durante un crudo invierno y del Señor Vitalis por hipotermia durante una tormenta de nieve que los sorprende en la calle en condiciones de mendicidad.
