La historia transcurre en el mundo de Remnant, el cual está invadido por fuerzas sobrenaturales y seres oscuros llamados "criaturas de Grimm". Previo a los eventos de la historia, la humanidad se enzarzó en una guerra para sobrevivir a los Grimm antes de descubrir un elemento misterioso al que llamaron "el polvo", el cual ayudó a la humanidad a combatir a los monstruos.
