Reno Raines era policía y de los mejores, pero cometió el error de testificar contra otros policías corruptos y por ello intentaron asesinarle. Durante el tiroteo, resultó muerta su esposa y Reno es acusado por el teniente Dixon de homicidio. Reno Raines es enviado a prisión, pero se escapa rápidamente y el teniente Dixon envía a un cazarrecompensas Nativo Americano llamado Bobby Sixkiller tras él. Pero Reno salva la vida de Bobby y de su hermana y obtiene su confianza y amistad. Reno adopta el nombre de Vince Black, con el que trabaja como cazarrecompensas para las Empresas Sixkiller, mientras busca un testigo que puede limpiar su nombre y poder poner fin a las actividades clandestinas del teniente Dixon.
