Del miedo nació el héroe...

Durante la ocupación de Budapest por los nazis, los judíos son perseguidos y enviados a campos de exterminio. Giorgio Perlasca es un italiano que combatió en la Guerra Civil Española a las órdenes del General Franco, del que recibió un salvoconducto de gratitud que le ha de servir de presentación en cualquier legación española del mundo. Al comprobar la manera en que son tratados los judíos, Perlasca decide ayudarles. Se presenta ante el Sr. Sanz Briz, embajador español en Hungría, y comienza a colaborar con él. A los pocos días, el embajador recibe la orden de Madrid de cerrar la Embajada y trasladarse a Suiza. Eso significaba que los judíos acogidos por la embajada española perdían la inmunidad diplomática. Para evitarlo, valiéndose de su salvoconducto, se hace pasar por cónsul español, poniendo en peligro su vida en diversas ocasiones, para salvar la de miles de judíos de todas las nacionalidades.
