El Padre Jacob, es una especie de hacedor de santos del Vaticano, un detective de milagros y, además, es exorcista. Su misión consiste en derrotar a Satán antes del fin del mundo. El padre Jacob (Martin Shaw) observa cómo las manifestaciones sobrenaturales aumentan cada vez más: apariciones, posesiones, señales relacionadas con los santos y, finalmente, milagros. Esto prueba de modo irrefutable que la lucha entre el Bien y el Mal es cada vez más intensa, y que el Armageddon, la batalla del fin del Mundo, se acerca. Y esto ocurre precisamente en el peor momento para la Iglesia, porque la falta de fe la hace más vulnerable.
