Basada en hechos reales, la historia sigue a un otaku llamado Tsuyoshi Yamada que salva a una hermosa chica del acoso de un borracho en el metro de Tokyo. Tras el incidente, ella le pide su dirección para mandarle un regalo de agradecimiento. Completamente enamorado, el joven decide pedir consejo en un foro de internet para saber cómo conseguir una cita con ella y declararse. Los miembros del foro lo apodarán "Densha Otoko" ("El hombre del tren") y se implicarán al máximo para ayudarle. A raíz de los mensajes del foro real, que obtuvo una gran popularidad, se realizaron una película, una serie de televisión, un manga y una novela, entre otros.
