Treading Water

Mica is a perfectly normal boy. Well he would be if he didn't smell of fish.

Mica is born smelling of fish that soap and doctors can't remove. Problems increase starting school as no one'll be his friend. He sees a therapist. His life seems doomed until he meets Laura.

"Treading Water" (2013), a poignant cinematic collaboration between Mecanismo Films and Rhombus Media, transcends borders with its production spanning Canada and Mexico. Directed by the visionary Analeine Cal y Mayor, the film delves into the complexities of familial bonds and the haunting specter of mental illness. The narrative centers on Micaela, portrayed with raw intensity by the talented Laura San Giacomo, who returns to her childhood home in Mexico to confront her mother's deteriorating mental state. The film's bilingual dialogue and cross-cultural setting enrich its exploration of universal themes, making it a compelling study of resilience and the search for understanding amidst personal turmoil. The film's aesthetic is a testament to the seamless integration of its Canadian and Mexican influences, with stunning visuals that capture the stark beauty of the Mexican landscape juxtaposed against the intimate, often claustrophobic interiors of the family home. Cinematographer Claudio Rocha's work is particularly noteworthy, as he masterfully uses light and shadow to reflect the internal struggles of the characters. The haunting score by composer Juan Andres Vergara further enhances the film's emotional depth, creating an immersive experience that lingers long after the credits roll. "Treading Water" also stands out for its nuanced portrayal of mental illness, eschewing clichés in favor of a more authentic and empathetic depiction. The film does not shy away from the harsh realities faced by those living with mental health issues, nor does it offer simplistic solutions. Instead, it invites the audience to witness the delicate dance of hope and despair, as Micaela grapples with her own fears and the legacy of her family's past. This approach not only humanizes the characters but also fosters a deeper understanding of the challenges they face. In its exploration of themes such as memory, identity, and the passage of time, "Treading Water" resonates with a universal audience. The film's narrative structure, which weaves together past and present, mirrors the protagonist's journey of self-discovery and reconciliation. Through its compelling storytelling and powerful performances, "Treading Water" emerges as a poignant reminder of the strength found in vulnerability and the enduring power of love and connection in the face of life's most daunting challenges.
