地球の中世時代のよう牧歌的な雰囲気をもつバクー人の惑星で調査活動を続けていたアンドロイドのデータ少佐に異変が起きた。実はバクー星は、基地も隊員もホログラム映像で偽装し、惑星連邦とソーナ人が共同で密かに観察していたのだ。誤作動が起こったデータはホログラムを解除、隊員達を人質にしてしまった。エンタープライズ号艦長ピカードはバクーに駆けつけ、ソーナ人のルアフォ総統に破壊されようとしていたデータを何とか回収した。ピカードはデータ誤作動の原因を解明していくうちに、バクー人の惑星は不老不死をもたらす特殊な放射線に包まれており、ゾーナ人が連邦のダワティ提督と共謀してバクー人を強制移住させ、永遠の若さの秘密を手に入れようと企んでいたことがわかった。この計画を阻止すべく、ピカードたちは連邦に逆らってでもこの惑星を守ることを決意、ゾーナの巨大戦艦2隻と戦いを繰り広げる。
