仮面ライダー生誕45周年に当たる2016年を「スーパーヒーローイヤー」と称した東映が、その一環として新たに制作した仮面ライダー作品である。1974年から1975年にかけて放映された仮面ライダーシリーズ第4作『仮面ライダーアマゾン』（以下『アマゾン』）を原典としているが、設定やストーリーはほとんど一新されており、いわゆる一種のリブート作品に相当する。『アマゾン』で敵怪人の通称に用いられていた「獣人」も、本作品では登場する異形の存在全般を指す「アマゾン」に置き換えられており、主人公の変身ヒーロー名だけにとどまらなくなっている。
