史実から着想を得た本作「MARIPOSAS 独裁と蝶たち」では、ドミニカ共和国の弁護士であり活動家であるミネルバ・ミラバルの人生をたどる。ミネルバは、1960年11月25日に同じく活動家の姉妹パトリアとマリア・テレサと共に、独裁者レオニダス・トルヒーヨの命令により殺害された。世界中にはびこるジェンダーに基づく暴力の象徴であるとして、国連が11月25日を「女性に対する暴力撤廃の国際デー」と定めることにつながったこの悲劇的な事件が起きた日までの出来事とその後が描かれる。
