Prior to TV success, Aherne's Mrs Merton character appeared on Frank Sidebottom's album "5/9/88", then made her TV debut on the 1991 Channel 4 gameshow Remote Control, hosted by Anthony H Wilson. The chat show was followed up by a sitcom, Mrs Merton and Malcolm, based on Mrs Merton and her son Malcolm, who was played by Craig Cash.

"The Mrs Merton Show," which aired in 1995 and was produced by Granada Television in the United Kingdom, was a groundbreaking comedy series that introduced audiences to the sharp-witted and delightfully acerbic character of Mrs Merton, portrayed by the talented Caroline Aherne. The show cleverly blended elements of a traditional talk show with biting satire, as Mrs Merton interviewed a range of celebrity guests, often catching them off guard with her seemingly innocent yet incisive questions. The character's persona, that of a no-nonsense, elderly Northern woman, allowed Aherne to deliver social commentary and humor in a way that was both disarming and insightful. One of the most memorable aspects of "The Mrs Merton Show" was its ability to subvert the typical celebrity interview format. Mrs Merton's questions often veered into the personal and unexpected, leading to hilarious and sometimes uncomfortable moments for her guests. This approach not only provided ample entertainment but also offered a critique of the superficial nature of many celebrity interviews. The show's success lay in its ability to balance humor with a keen observational eye, making it a standout in the landscape of British television comedy. The show also featured a variety of recurring sketches and segments that added to its charm and humor. From the "This Is Your Life" parodies to the "Celebrity Squares" game show spoofs, "The Mrs Merton Show" was rich with inventive content that kept viewers engaged and laughing. These segments showcased the versatility of Caroline Aherne and her co-writers, who were able to craft a multi-faceted show that appealed to a broad audience. "The Mrs Merton Show" left a lasting impact on British comedy, paving the way for other character-driven sketch shows and cementing Caroline Aherne's place as a comedic genius. Its blend of sharp wit, social commentary, and fearless humor continues to be celebrated and remembered as a high point in the history of British television. The show's legacy is a testament to the power of comedy to entertain, challenge, and provoke thought, all while making audiences laugh out loud.
