軍師としての仕官の口を求め諸国を流浪していた山本勘助は、甲斐国葛笠村で武田家家臣・赤部下野守に襲われた娘・ミツを助ける。やがて二人は恋仲となり、ミツは勘助の子を宿すが鹿狩りに出た甲斐国主・武田信虎に理不尽にも殺されてしまう。怒りに燃える勘助は謝意を表しに来た武田家宿老・板垣信方に襲い掛かるが、板垣に勘助の剣は通用せず、勘助は勢いに任せ武田家への仕官を請う。 武田家の内部に紛れてミツの敵を討たんとする勘助であったが、武田家の嫡男・晴信が信虎への謀反を志し、信虎の治世を改めようとしている事に気づく。やがて信虎の甲斐追放は叶い、勘助は正式に武田家へ仕官。「兵は詭道なり」の孫子の言葉を信条に持つ勘助の軍略は冴え渡り、数々の戦でその功を発揮。勘助に対する晴信の信頼はますます篤くなり、初めは勘助を疎んでいた武田家家臣団もやがて勘助を認めるようになる。また勘助の武田家への忠心は、晴信への復讐心に燃える晴信の側室・由布姫の心をも溶かしていった。 やがて軍師としての勘助の野望は、晴信に天下を平定させる事へと移った。その第一歩として晴信は信濃攻めに着手。信濃の強敵・村上義清を辛うじて打ち破った晴信と勘助であったが、その先の越後にはまだ見ぬ強敵がいた。越後の龍・長尾景虎その人である。越後の内乱を圧倒的な力で平定した景虎という人物に警戒心を抱く晴信と勘助。一方の景虎は他国を侵し続ける晴信に義憤を抱いていた。晴信と景虎という、二人の相容れぬイデオロギーはやがて川中島を舞台に激突する事となる。それはまた、勘助の軍師としての誇りを賭けた戦いの場でもあった。
