２００２年に芸術選奨文部科学大臣賞文学部門などを受賞したサスペンス「模倣犯」は宮部の代表作の１つだが、「楽園」はこの「模倣犯」での事件から９年後を描いたもの。ライター前畑滋子が再び、ある殺人事件の真相へと迫っていく謎が謎を呼ぶ展開の中、単なるミステリー要素だけではなく、家族に向き合う“心”の物語が描かれている。主役の滋子を演じるのは、連続ドラマＷ初出演の仲間由紀恵。「模倣犯事件」の“トラウマ”を抱えながらも、新たな難事件に立ち向かう勇敢な心を持った女性を真っすぐに演じる。また、脚本は連続テレビ小説「まれ」や、「連続ドラマＷ ヒポクラテスの誓い」の篠崎絵里子。 ある少年の描いた１枚の絵からつながっていく１つの真実。苦悩と葛藤の中、“楽園”を求めて生きる家族の姿を描いたヒューマンミステリー。
