巨大戦艦リヴァイアスに閉じ込められた子供達。閉鎖空間で懸命に生きる少年少女を描くストーリー。

2137年、大規模な太陽フレアによって出現した高密度のプラズマ雲が、黄道面を境に太陽系の南半分を覆いつくし、地球も南半球が壊滅、17億もの人命が失われる被害を受ける。このフレアは「ゲドゥルト・フェノメーン」、プラズマ雲は「ゲドゥルトの海」と名付けられた。 2225年、地球の衛星軌道にあった航宙士養成所リーベ・デルタは、何者かの襲撃によって制御不能になり、ゲドゥルトの海へ突入してしまう。しかしその時、リーベ・デルタ内部に隠されていた外洋型航宙可潜艦「黒のリヴァイアス」が起動した。 教官たちは全員殉職し、リヴァイアスに避難できたのは少年少女ばかり487人。なぜか彼らは、自分たちを救助してくれるはずの軌道保安庁から攻撃を受け、戸惑い、混乱しつつもこれと戦い続ける。閉鎖された極限状態にある艦内では、艦の指揮権や物資の配給を巡って、少年少女同士が陰惨な争いを繰り広げながら、火星圏から土星圏、天王星圏へと当てのない逃避行を続けていく。
