本作は、ノイタミナ枠で以前に放送された『怪 〜ayakashi〜』のエピソード「化猫」の続編で、制作スタッフもほぼ同じである。 前作に続いて、謎の薬売りを主人公とし、近世（江戸時代）の日本をモチーフにした世界（ただし、最後のエピソードのみ近代）を舞台に、「座敷童子」「海坊主」「のっぺらぼう」「鵺（ぬえ）」「化猫」という5つの怪異エピソードがオムニバス形式で描かれる。
