Manchester, 1976. Tony Wilson is an ambitious but frustrated local TV news reporter looking for a way to make his mark. After witnessing a life-changing concert by a band known as the Sex Pistols, he persuades his station to televise one of their performances, and soon Manchester's punk groups are clamoring for him to manage them. Riding the wave of a musical revolution, Wilson and his friends create the legendary Factory Records label and The Hacienda club.

"24 Hour Party People" is a vibrant British comedy-drama directed by Michael Winterbottom, released in 2002. Written by Frank Cottrell Boyce, it’s a rollicking, semi-fictionalized romp through Manchester’s punk and rave scenes, anchored by the irrepressible Tony Wilson—a real-life visionary who reshaped music culture. The story begins in 1976, where Tony Wilson (Steve Coogan), a restless TV reporter, attends a transformative Sex Pistols gig at Manchester’s Lesser Free Trade Hall. Inspired, he convinces his station to air their raw chaos, sparking a punk explosion. Soon, Wilson dives into the music world, managing chaotic bands like Joy Division and founding Factory Records with a ragtag crew—including his wife Lindsay (Shirley Henderson) and producer Martin Hannett (Andy Serkis). The Hacienda nightclub follows, birthing the Madchester rave era with Happy Mondays, only to teeter on excess and financial ruin. Famed for Coogan’s pitch-perfect, fourth-wall-breaking portrayal of Wilson, the film blends manic energy with a mockumentary vibe, backed by a killer soundtrack of post-punk and acid house. Winterbottom’s kinetic direction and cameos from real figures—like Howard Devoto—add authenticity to its anarchic charm. Released in 2002, "24 Hour Party People" won acclaim for its witty take on a cultural revolution, earning a BAFTA nomination and cult status. A love letter to Manchester’s musical legacy, it’s a wild, bittersweet ode to creativity unbound—and the hangovers that follow.
