Sound of Metal

Music was his world. Then silence revealed a new one.

Metal drummer Ruben begins to lose his hearing. When a doctor tells him his condition will worsen, he thinks his career and life is over. His girlfriend Lou checks the former addict into a rehab for the deaf hoping it will prevent a relapse and help him adapt to his new life. After being welcomed and accepted just as he is, Ruben must choose between his new normal and the life he once knew.

"Sound of Metal" (2020), a poignant cinematic journey produced by Flat 7 and Ward Four, delves into the life of Ruben Stone, a heavy metal drummer portrayed with raw intensity by Riz Ahmed. The film, set in the United States, captures Ruben's sudden plunge into the world of silence as he grapples with rapid hearing loss. This unexpected turn forces him to confront not only his own identity but also the future of his music career and his relationship with his girlfriend and bandmate, Lou, played by Olivia Cooke. Director Darius Marder crafts a narrative that is both intimate and expansive, exploring themes of adaptation, resilience, and the search for inner peace amidst life's tumultuous changes. The film's strength lies in its unflinching portrayal of Ruben's journey through the Deaf community, guided by the compassionate yet firm hand of Joe, the head of a shelter for the Deaf, played by Paul Raci. Joe's influence helps Ruben navigate his new reality, challenging him to embrace silence rather than fight against it. The authenticity of the film is heightened by the use of sound design, which immerses the audience in Ruben's auditory experience, making the silence as impactful as the music that once defined his life. This innovative approach to storytelling not only enhances the viewer's empathy but also underscores the film's message about the power of acceptance and the beauty found in stillness. "Sound of Metal" transcends the typical narrative of disability by focusing on the protagonist's internal transformation rather than his external struggles. Ruben's journey is one of self-discovery, as he learns to let go of his past and find new meaning in life. The film's pacing is deliberate, allowing the audience to feel the weight of Ruben's decisions and the gradual shifts in his perspective. This slow burn approach culminates in a deeply moving climax that leaves viewers contemplating the true essence of sound and silence in their own lives. In its essence, "Sound of Metal" is a testament to the human spirit's ability to adapt and find harmony in the face of adversity. The film's accolades, including multiple Academy Award nominations, reflect its profound impact on audiences and critics alike. Through its compelling performances, innovative sound design, and heartfelt storytelling, "Sound of Metal" resonates as a powerful exploration of loss, identity, and the search for belonging in a world that can be both deafening and silent.
