This is what love feels like.

Oliver meets the irreverent and unpredictable Anna only months after his father Hal Fields has passed away. This new love floods Oliver with memories of his father, who, following the death of his wife of 44 years, came out of the closet at age 75 to live a full, energized, and wonderfully tumultuous gay life – which included a younger boyfriend.

"Beginners," a poignant and heartfelt film released in 2011, was a collaborative effort between Parts & Labor and Olympus Pictures, with production spanning both Canada and the United States. Directed by Mike Mills, the movie intricately weaves together themes of love, loss, and self-discovery, drawing audiences into the life of Oliver, a graphic artist navigating the complexities of his father's late-life coming out and subsequent battle with cancer. The film's title, "Beginners," serves as a metaphor for the perpetual state of starting anew, whether in relationships, understanding one's identity, or coping with grief. The narrative brilliance of "Beginners" lies in its non-linear storytelling, which juxtaposes Oliver's present-day romance with the actress Anna against flashbacks of his father Hal's final years. Hal, portrayed with warmth and vulnerability by Christopher Plummer, embarks on a journey of self-acceptance and joy in his newfound freedom, inspiring both Oliver and the audience. The film's visual style, characterized by a mix of vibrant colors and nostalgic home videos, enhances the emotional depth and authenticity of the characters' experiences, making the film a visually and emotionally engaging experience. Ewan McGregor's portrayal of Oliver adds a layer of introspective melancholy to the film, as he grapples with his father's legacy and his own hesitations in love. The chemistry between McGregor and Mélanie Laurent, who plays Anna, brings a tender and hopeful dimension to the story, illustrating the possibility of connection and growth even amidst personal turmoil. The film's supporting cast, including the charming Jack Russell Terrier Arthur, who serves as a silent yet profound companion to both Hal and Oliver, adds humor and heart to the narrative. "Beginners" stands out not only for its compelling performances and innovative storytelling but also for its honest exploration of human relationships and the courage required to embrace change. The film's universal themes resonate deeply, making it a timeless piece that continues to inspire and move audiences. Through its depiction of love in its many forms—familial, romantic, and self-love—"Beginners" offers a poignant reminder of the beauty and complexity of life's journey.
