Место действия сериала — космический корабль «Красный карлик». Смертельный выброс радиации убивает на корабле всё живое, кроме младшего техника Дэйва Листера, находившегося в замедлителе времени, и его беременной кошки Франкенштейн, находившейся в грузовом отсеке.
