Главная героиня — единорог по имени Твайлайт Спаркл, ученица Принцессы Селестии, которая всё время сидела за книгами и не желала ни с кем общаться. Видя, как героиня зарылась с головой в учёбу, Принцесса даёт ей задание найти друзей и посылает Твайлайт и её ассистента, дракона по имени Спайк, в Понивилль. Там она встречает разных пони, своих новых друзей: задиристую Рейнбоу Деш, элегантную Рарити, трудолюбивую Эплджек, робкую Флатершай, и гиперактивную Пинки Пай.
