Black Books — это небольшой книжный магазин в Лондоне, чей хозяин, ирландец Бернард Блэк, вероятно один из наименее пригодных к этой работе людей: он совершенно не собирается ничего продавать, закрывает магазин в любое угодное ему время, постоянно пьянствует и издевается над посетителями. В этих нелёгких занятиях ему помогают неуклюжий ассистент Мэнни и старая знакомая Френ, работающая в магазине по соседству.
