Time Bandits

…they didn’t make history, they stole it!

Young history buff Kevin can scarcely believe it when six dwarfs emerge from his closet one night. Former employees of the Supreme Being, they've purloined a map charting all of the holes in the fabric of time and are using it to steal treasures from different historical eras. Taking Kevin with them, they variously drop in on Napoleon, Robin Hood and King Agamemnon before the Supreme Being catches up with them.

"Time Bandits," a 1981 cinematic gem produced by Handmade Films in the United Kingdom, is a whimsical journey through time and imagination, masterfully directed by Terry Gilliam. The film follows a young boy named Kevin, portrayed by Craig Warnock, who embarks on an extraordinary adventure with a band of time-traveling dwarves. These mischievous bandits, led by the charismatic Randall, played by David Rappaport, have stolen a map that allows them to hop through various historical epochs, from ancient Greece to the Napoleonic Wars, all while evading the wrath of the Supreme Being and the ominous figure of Evil, portrayed with chilling intensity by David Warner. What sets "Time Bandits" apart is its seamless blend of humor, fantasy, and social commentary. Gilliam's signature surrealistic style is evident in the film's inventive set designs and the clever juxtaposition of historical figures with the absurd antics of the bandits. The narrative cleverly critiques consumerism and the exploitation of history, as seen in the memorable scene where the bandits attempt to sell advanced technology to Napoleon, played with comedic flair by Ian Holm. The film's visual and narrative creativity is complemented by a sharp script co-written by Gilliam and Michael Palin, ensuring that the humor resonates with both children and adults. The performances in "Time Bandits" are a testament to the film's enduring appeal. Craig Warnock's portrayal of Kevin is both earnest and endearing, providing a relatable anchor for the audience amidst the chaos of time travel. The ensemble cast of dwarves, including Kenny Baker and Jack Purvis, bring a delightful energy to their roles, embodying the spirit of adventure and mischief that drives the plot. David Warner's portrayal of Evil adds a layer of darkness and urgency to the narrative, elevating the film beyond mere fantasy into a compelling tale of morality and choice. "Time Bandits" remains a beloved classic, celebrated for its imaginative storytelling and its ability to entertain while provoking thought. The film's influence can be seen in subsequent works of fantasy cinema, and its themes of adventure, friendship, and the battle between good and evil continue to resonate with audiences. As a product of Handmade Films, "Time Bandits" exemplifies the innovative spirit of British cinema in the early 1980s, leaving an indelible mark on the genre and securing its place in the hearts of moviegoers around the world.
