The Taming of the Shrew

The swaggering Petruchio, eager to wive it wealthily in Padua, agrees to marry the spitting hellcat, Katherine.

Baptista has two daughters: Kate and Bianca. Everyone wants to wed the fair Bianca, but nobody's much interested in problem child, Kate. Baptista declares that he won't give Bianca away in a marriage until he's found a husband for Kate, so all the suitors begin busily hunting out a madman who's willing to do it, and they find Petruchio: a man who's come to wive it wealthily in Padua. And Petruchio marries Kate with a plan to tame her, while everybody else begins scheming to win Bianca's hand.

"The Taming of the Shrew," a 1980 television production by Time-Life Television Productions and the BBC, offers a vibrant adaptation of William Shakespeare's classic comedy. Directed by Jonathan Miller, this rendition stands out for its intimate and straightforward approach, stripping away the often elaborate staging to focus on the raw dynamics between characters. Set in a minimalist environment, the production emphasizes the psychological interplay and power struggles, particularly between the fiery Katherine, portrayed by Sarah Badel, and the cunning Petruchio, played by John Cleese. John Cleese's portrayal of Petruchio is a highlight of the production, bringing a unique blend of humor and intensity to the role. Known for his comedic genius, Cleese infuses Petruchio with a charismatic yet domineering presence, making the character's taming tactics both amusing and unsettling. Sarah Badel's Katherine complements Cleese's performance with her own fierce and nuanced interpretation, capturing the character's transformation from a rebellious shrew to a more subdued partner with depth and authenticity. The production's setting and costume design reflect a deliberate choice to focus on the text and performances rather than on visual spectacle. The use of a simple, almost austere backdrop allows the audience to concentrate on the dialogue and the evolving relationships among the characters. This approach not only highlights the timelessness of Shakespeare's language but also underscores the universal themes of power, submission, and gender roles that continue to resonate with contemporary audiences. Overall, the 1980 Time-Life and BBC production of "The Taming of the Shrew" is a compelling interpretation that balances humor with the darker aspects of the play. By focusing on the performances of its lead actors and maintaining a minimalist aesthetic, the production offers a fresh perspective on a well-known work, inviting viewers to reconsider the complexities of Shakespeare's exploration of human relationships and societal expectations.
