Nội dung Fringe xoay quanh 1 đội FBI ở Boston, với mật vụ đặc biệt Olivia Dunham, nhà khoa học hơi bất bình thường tên Walter Bishop và con trai ông, cũng là 1 tiến sĩ hóa học. Bộ 3 này tham gia điều tra vào 1 loạt các vụ việc kì lạ, chủ yếu nằm trong lĩnh vực khoa học giả tưởng như: các căn bệnh hay virus cực hiếm, các khả năng về tâm linh… mà mọi đầu mối trong các vụ này đều dẫn về 1 mối đó là “The Pattern".
