Xa xưa, thế giới chia ra làm 4 bộ tộc có quyền lực ngang nhau : Hỏa Tộc, Thủy Tộc, Thổ Tộc và Phong Tộc. Mỗi tộc sẽ có một số người có khả năng sử dụng nguyên tố Tộc của mình. Hàng ngàn năm qua, cả 4 bộ tộc cùng chung sống trong hòa bình. Nhưng rồi, người trị vì mới của Hỏa Tộc, Hỏa Vương Sozin đã khơi mào chiến tranh. Người duy nhất có thể ngăn chặn việc đó chính là Avatar. Avatar chính là hóa thân của Thần Linh, người duy nhất có thể điều khiển cả 4 nguyên tố đó. Nhưng khi thế giới cần đến ông nhất thì ông lại biến mất. Một trăm năm sau, một Thủy nhân tên Karata và anh trai của cô ấy, Sokka, đã tìm ra Aang, bị phong ấn trong một tảng băng. Giờ họ phải giúp Avatar điều khiển được cả 4 nguyên tố trước mùa hè, khi mà cháu trai của Sozin, Hỏa Vương Ozai, sử dụng sức mạnh của sao chổi tấn công và tuyên bố chiến thắng của Hỏa Tộc.
