Trước cuộc xâm lược Iraq năm 2003 không lâu, một đơn vị đặc biệt tiến hành một chiến dịch giải cứu con tin, trong đó có Trung sĩ John Porter. Khi đang làm nhiệm vụ, Porter đã chạm trán, tước vũ khí và tha mạng một cậu bé đánh bom cảm tử có tên As'ad. Chiến dịch giải cứu con tin diễn ra thành công nhưng cái giá phải trả là hai binh sĩ thiệt mạng, một người bị đưa vào bệnh viện và sau đó sống trong tình trạng thực vật. Tin rằng việc Porter thả thằng bé As'ad là nguyên nhân chính dẫn tới chiến dịch bại lộ, Porter bị ép giải ngũ.
