希区柯克首次尝试纯喜剧片，根据同名舞台剧改编，讲述农夫选妻，兜兜转转之后发现意中人却近在眼前的故事。此片改编的最大难度在于把台词甚多的剧本改成纯靠画面表达喜感的默片，希区柯克默默地从影片中段开始发力，将下午茶聚会段落处理成经典打闹喜剧，令观众捧腹不已。由于摄影师考克斯在拍摄中期生病，因此希区柯克还亲自掌机客串了一回摄影，而希区柯克也为了此片的宣传而给英国报纸写了一封公开信，这开启了希区柯克对他的影片进行自我宣传之路。
