十九世纪六十年代的美国芝加哥灰熊橄榄球队可是名噪一时的强队，多次取得令人羡慕的成绩。作为球队的核心，布赖恩一直是灰熊队最主要的后卫人选。直到有一天曾经为大学全明星球员的贾乐来到了灰熊队，并以其突出的表现欲取代布赖恩在队中的位置。出于误会，布赖恩开始处处与他作对并经常取笑贾乐。然而这一切被教练看在了眼里，在那个种族歧视盛行的年代，教练把布赖恩和贾乐安排在同一个寝室里，这一举动立刻引起外界的极大反响。然而随着二人的慢慢相处，布赖恩很快被贾乐忠厚的为人和敬业的精神折服，两个人最终成为了挚友，并一起为灰熊队创造了无数次辉煌。不但如此，就连他们妻子之间的关系也日益密切，两家渐渐成为了互相帮助的好朋友。但天有不测风云，在一次比赛中贾乐意外受伤，膝盖伤情严重，很可能再也打不了球。在贾乐饱受病痛折磨的时候，布赖恩与妻子经常安慰他，想尽办法使他不失去打球的信心。布赖恩每天不厌其烦地帮助贾乐做康复训练，几个月后贾乐的腿神奇般地康复了。贾乐又一次回到了这支给过他荣誉也因他而辉煌的球队，与此同时在内心他也深深地感激布赖恩这个好朋友，希望与他一起为球队取得更多地辉煌。又一个新的赛季来到了，然而布赖恩的身体却日渐衰弱。医生的诊断简直令人震惊:他患上了一种非常罕见的癌症。眼看布赖恩的身体日渐虚弱，贾乐一家和布赖恩的妻子一直在他身边支持、鼓励着他，希望他能够尽早战胜病魔重新回到自己为之奋斗的球场。但是情况似乎越来越遭，医生不得不切掉了他的肺，日后他将再也不能继续打球了。对于一个运动员来说这无疑是最痛苦的一件事情，虽然如此，但布赖恩还是乐观地面对着这一切，并与死神顽强地进行着斗争。虽然包括贾乐在内的所有队友及朋友一直在尽最大努力帮助他，但最终他还是没能逃脱病魔的控制，永远地离开了他热爱的橄榄球运动，离开了他为之奉献的灰熊队，使所有热爱他的人失去了一个开朗、热心的好朋友。
