On the Nose

Brendan is a janitor at a university who has a fondness for gambling, especially betting on horse races. However, he doesn't have much skill at it, and poorly considered bets have drained the bank account he'd set aside for his daughter's education. Brendan's wife has made Brendan promise to give up gambling, but when their daughter announces she's just been accepted to Trinity College in Ireland, Brendan has to come up with the tuition money, and fast. While doing his sweeping at work, Brendan makes a remarkable discovery - the preserved head of an aboriginal tribesman who, under proper conditions, can pick the winners in horse races.

"On the Nose," a 2001 film produced by Highwire Pictures and Subotica, is a unique blend of comedy and drama set against the backdrop of Ireland and Canada. Directed by David Caffrey, the movie follows the life of Delaney, portrayed by Dan Aykroyd, a man who discovers he has inherited a peculiar gift from his Irish grandfather: the ability to predict the future through nosebleeds. This quirky premise sets the stage for a narrative that intertwines humor with deeper themes of identity and destiny. The film's strength lies in its ensemble cast, which includes notable performances by Robbie Coltrane and Brenda Blethyn, who bring depth and warmth to their roles. Coltrane plays the role of Delaney's friend, adding a layer of comic relief and camaraderie that enriches the storyline. Blethyn, as Delaney's mother, delivers a poignant performance that explores the complexities of family ties and the burdens of inherited traits. The chemistry among the actors enhances the film's emotional resonance, making it more than just a comedic romp. "On the Nose" also delves into the cultural clash between Irish and Canadian sensibilities, offering a fresh perspective on the immigrant experience. Delaney's journey back to Ireland to uncover the origins of his gift serves as a metaphor for reconnecting with one's roots and understanding one's place in the world. The film's setting in both countries provides a visually appealing contrast, with Ireland's lush landscapes juxtaposed against the urban settings of Canada, adding to the narrative's richness. While "On the Nose" may not have achieved widespread commercial success, it remains a hidden gem for those who appreciate offbeat humor and heartfelt storytelling. The film's exploration of fate and free will, combined with its engaging performances and cultural insights, make it a worthwhile watch for cinephiles looking for something different. It's a testament to the power of indie films to tell unique stories that resonate on multiple levels.
