海蒂自幼父母双亡，被姨妈收养。后来，因为姨妈接受了一份工作，于是不得不将海蒂丢给生活在阿尔卑斯山上的独自一人的爷爷。通过逐渐的接触，性格孤僻、倔强但内心善良的爷爷冰冷、孤独的心被善良、活泼、懂事的孙女所融化，与海蒂快乐地生活在一起。从此，海蒂开始与爷爷、牧羊犬约瑟夫、牧羊少年皮特以及一群山羊无忧无虑地生活在阿尔卑斯山上，并用她的纯真和善良帮助着附近的村民们。 然而，姨妈因为长期对海蒂的爷爷的误解，海蒂的姨妈始终放心不下海蒂，哄骗不知情的海蒂，将她送到了瑞士一个富商家里，给一个体弱多病而不能站立行走的富家千金克拉拉（台湾译名小芬）做玩伴和陪读。在富商家里，早已经变成山里孩子的海蒂与傲慢、严格、刻板的女管家格格不入，对压抑的生活一直无法适应，在这个原本沉闷的家庭时，弄出了一连串滑稽有趣的事来，连严厉古板的家庭教师也因海蒂的童心稚趣而变得亲切。因为舍不得丢下克拉拉一个人，于是始终压抑着自己希望回到爷爷身边的愿望。 最终，内心守着煎熬的海蒂病倒。克拉拉的父亲得知究竟后，被海蒂的善良感动，派人将海蒂送回了阿尔卑斯山，并且还将女儿送到阿尔卑斯山度假。于是，海蒂每天陪着克拉拉做康复锻炼，最终发生了意想不到的奇妙变化。
