该剧以1957-58年之间，战败后经历了十年光阴的日本为舞台背景，刻画一群挑战南极观测、成为世界上首支在南极生活一年的南极越冬队的男人们和桦太犬的感人身姿。故事讲述日本人为了卸去“战败国”这个沉重的十字架，取回自尊心，决定向世界注目的“南极观测”发起挑战。但是在主人公苍持（木村拓哉饰演）等人积极筹备这一计划的同时，但国家和企业在资金援助方面却呈不积极的态度，去南极探险的路难以顺利。
