Basada en las divagaciones semi-autobiográficas del ecléctico autor Jonathan Ames, Bored to Death nos cuenta la historia de un escritor obsesionado con las novelas negras (Jason Schwartzman) que, tras una dolorosa ruptura con su novia Suzanne (Olivia Thirlby), impulsivamente decide anunciar sus servicios como detective privado en Craigslist, aunque no tenga licencia ni experiencia alguna.
