La doctora Dana Stowe (interpretada por Janine Turner, Doctor en Alaska, Máximo riesgo), es una cirujana que lleva a cabo diversas investigaciones en un prestigioso hospital de Filadelfia. Su trabajo es su vida y debido a la importancia del mismo su meticulosidad y compromiso con las vidas de sus pacientes hacen que las emociones no se interpongan en su labor profesional. "Lu" Delgado (Rosa Blasi, Sensaciónn de vivir, Los locos de Caroline) dirige una clínica en Filadelfia, a la que acude gente sin recursos. Ha crecido en un barrio pobre y sabe lo difícil que es para estas familias obtener una atención médica de calidad. Por ello pone todo su empeño en que su trabajo llegue a las mas desfavorecidas. Pero las subvenciones a la clínica se agotan y Lu decide solicitar ayuda al hospital en el que trabaja Dana.
