La serie trata la historia de la familia Camden, la familia de un pastor Protestante de la ciudad ficticia de Glenoak, ubicada en California. Los personajes principales son el Reverendo Eric Camden (Stephen Collins), su esposa Annie (Catherine Hicks), y sus 7 hijos (todos sus nombres derivados de personajes bíblicos, menos el de Lucy): Matt (Barry Watson), Mary (Jessica Biel), Lucy (Beverley Mitchell), Simon (David Gallagher), Ruthie (Mackenzie Rosman) y los gemelos, Sam (Nikolas Brino) y David (Lorenzo Brino). Originalmente la familia estaba compuesta por 7 integrantes (los dos padres, más cinco hijos), hasta el capítulo 14 de la tercera temporada, titulado "Alabadas sean las mujeres" ("In Praise of Women"), cuando Annie da a luz a los gemelos Sam y David, aumentando así el número a 9 integrantes familiares más el perro que tienen como mascota de nombre Happy. Cuatro de los niños Camden (Matt, Mary, Lucy y Simon) se van de casa a lo largo de la serie. During Simon's first day at Junior High School, he is caught with a knife that his mother had given him to cut his chicken. Simon is suspended for a day. Mary offers to help Lucy with her locker that doesn't open because of Eric's old lock that he had given her. Meanwhile, when Lucy takes an aspirin that Mary had given her, the principal notices them with the medicine and takes them to the office.
