La serie comienza con lo que parece ser el final. Una mujer joven, Ellen, es encontrada corriendo por las calles medio desnuda y cubierta en sangre. Poco más tarde, la policía descubre que su prometido ha sido asesinado a golpes en el apartamento donde vivían. Esto hace de Ellen la principal sospechosa y es arrestada rápidamente. A partir de ese momento, la acción se sitúa seis meses antes de estos hechos cuando Ellen, recién salida del colegio de abogados y laureada por sus primeros y prestigiosos trabajos, rechaza una oferta para trabajar junto al fiscal Hollis Nye (Philip Bosco, 'Ley y orden: SVU') para poder convertirse en discípulo de la todopoderosa Patty Hewes. Cuando Nye se entera esto, advierte a Ellen que trabajar junto a Hewes la cambiará como persona.
