Tatau sigue a Kyle y Budgie, dos veinteañeros amigos londinenses que partieron para viajar por el mundo. Antes del viaje, Kyle se hace un tatuaje al estilo maorí para celebrar su destino final: las Islas Cook. Al bucear en una laguna, Kyle encuentra el cadáver de una niña local, Aumea, atada bajo el agua. Al regresar a la laguna con la policía, Kyle descubre que su cadáver ha desaparecido. Pero Kyle sabe lo que vio. Desesperados por descubrir lo que sucedió, Kyle y Budgie se ven absorbidos más y más en un mundo de mitos, símbolos y visiones alucinatorias maoríes... hasta que finalmente se revela el significado completo del tatuaje de Kyle.
