John Cardinal es un policía canadiense que, tras trabajar durante 10 años en Toronto, regresa a su ciudad natal para incorporarse a la Brigada de homicidios. Allí conoce a su nueva compañera, Lisa Delorme, una mujer solitaria y desconfiada. Delorme tiene una labor que hacer: saber si Cardinal es responsable de un chivatazo que impidió una detención. Sin embargo, él no debe darse cuenta de ello así que ambos trabajan juntos para resolver el asesinato de una adolescente. Cardinal no tarda en empezar a sospechar de su compañera y ese doble juego de intrigas y sospechas se traslada al caso en el que, según van avanzando y resolviendo incógnitas, se van acercando el uno al otro.
